The Colorado Bureau of Land Management notes that wildfire season typically runs May through September, so it’s not too late to make a plan to help protect you and your family in the event of a wildfire. The Denver branch of the Federal Emergency Management Agency offers tips on preparing for a wildfire, as well as what to do if a fire is approaching or reaches your home. One of the agency’s main preparedness tips is to build an emergency supply kit.

Need help building a kit? On Tuesday, Aug. 6, The Allstate Foundation and Points of Light are hosting a Good & Ready emergency natural disaster preparedness event at the Children’s Museum of Denver. There, you and your family can build and take home a free disaster preparedness kit. Four hundred kits will be available and come with items such as a hand-crank flashlight/radio, garbage bags and hand sanitizing wipes (while supplies last).

Making sure your home and property are properly equipped to protect against wildfires is a major step in prevention. However, if a disaster such as a wildfire strikes, an emergency kit will be one of the keys to help your family ride out an emergency situation. Don’t forget this important step as you weather wildfire season in Colorado.
